With specialized networks and the Internet peeling off more and more viewers from the old dinosaur networks, perhaps Couric could establish a narrower niche in the new media marketplace for CBS, which may be content to skew its programming to attract women and alienate men. In a world with so many 24/7 news sources, the very idea of people pinning their lives to one major network evening newscast has little appeal to anybody but the very old, who make up the bulk of CBS’s audience. This could become an aging Katie Couric’s kingdom.
