FNC's "War Stories": From the ballpark to the battlefield

This is original and really cool. This Sunday, July 9 at 8pm ET, FNC's War Stories with Oliver North will present "From the Ballpark to the Battlefield: Baseball and WWII" (repeats 11pm.) The episode will feature interviews with some of the greatest players in the history of baseball--Yogi Berra, Johnny Pesky, the Red Sox’s Curt Schilling, and Dominic DiMaggio among them--as they reflect on the role of their sport during wartime. (The airdate of July 9 is, fittingly, also the eve of the 2006 All-Star game in Pittsburgh.) And I did not know this: more than 500 major league players and 4,000 minor leaguers served in the military during World War II.

I am personally really looking forward to the interview with New York Yankee and ten time World Series champion Yogi Berra. Even though I don't know very much about baseball (and like most people who didn't live through it, I don't know enough about WWII, though I'm always working to change that) I do know that Yogi Berra is a very, very, very cool person in all ways (that's a pic of him in his Navy seaman uniform, above.) The guy is a Zen master of amazing quotes--even if you're young and you've never heard his name, you've probably quoted him without knowing it. Though there is of course much more to his story than his famous accidental-existentialist quotes, you need to check them out anyway ...in addition to brightening your day today, I guarantee Yogi's famous talent for everyman philosophy will make you tune in on Sunday to learn more about him and his service in wartime.
