The World Without Pictures

Even though I am not generally a PC gamer, I have so been digging Rock, Paper, Shotgun lately (very RSS-worthy), and the work of an assemblage of writers who helped pave the way for me to exist. Today they reminded us that judging is open for the 13th Annual Interactive Fiction competition. Speaking of paving the way, I was raised on text adventures, and as much as modern design elements have advanced the genre, there's something about the text-only experience that it seems can't be replicated on the current stage.

The competition site has the entire suite of competition entries, complete with their respective interpreters, up for download, and anyone can vote for the winners -- with a few caveats. As RPS points out, it's a big commitment -- there are 29 entries in total this year, and you must play at least five of them to be eligible to vote. And you must play each of those for no less and no more than two hours. So if you've got 20 hours to spend on text gaming between now and the November 15th, get crack-a-lackin'. [Rock, Paper, Shotgun]

As for me, I'd prefer to abstain from the vote and just check out this year's entries at my own leisure. Keep your eyes peeled, because I just might review some of 'em.
