CBS chief Les Moonves outlines all the reasons why CBS News and CNN should merge--and then says that he doesn't see it happening any time soon.

Forgive The Cable Gamer her cynicism, but Moonves' words sound to her like expectations-game management. TCG doesn't exactly know whose expectations Moonves is seeking to manage--could be Sumner Redstone, Jeff Bewkes, CBS talent, CNN talent, or all of the above--but she is sure that Moonves is playing here.
Moonves is not nearly as smart as TCG once thought that he was--his hiring of Katie Couric was a big dud, a symphony of overhyped expectations, in which Moonves proved that he had no new ideas for reinventing the nightly newscast, at least no good new ideas.
But TCG doesn't doubt that Moonves is still playin' away.
