Gawker joins The Cable Game

Written By mista sense on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 | 8:33 AM

As The Cable Gamer has noted many times, all media are converging.   Newspapers have video, TV channels have text on their websites.  In other words, everybody is trying to drink everybody else's milkshake.

So we can note, thanks to The Awl's always fabulous Choire Sicha, the entry of a new player--Gawker.   As we can see from this chart, assembled by Gawker chief Nick Denton, Gawker gets bigger traffic than the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, etc.  That's not only the metric of eyeballs, or revenue, but it's quite an achievement.

Gawker long ago redefined gossip, only to see TMZ redefine it further.  But soon, TCG predicts, Gawker will have its own video outlet.

UPDATE: Bloggasm (tee hee) and Cable Gamer (at least part time) Simon Owens writes to suggest that perhaps Gawker's numbers are less impressive than they might seem to be at first glance.  And so, of course, measuring web traffic descends into the same statistical hell as TV ratings--everybody has a different metric, and nobody is ever in last place. Thank's Simon, for adding a valuable wrinkle!
