The New York Times' Tim Arango has all the details, but the gist is this: Wolff failed in the Internet startup biz, but at least got a book out of it. He failed with Newser, which, according to Arango, "has yet to turn a profit." He failed with his idiotic book about Rupert Murdoch--but again, he did get the book. And now this gig.
The Cable Gamer thinks that E5 did something smart by hiring Janice Min to run The Hollywood Reporter; she, after all, has a great track record, most notably at US Weekly. So maybe she can liven up that faded brand. But Wolff is no Min. He's best known for maneuvering around Michael's in Manhattan. So while he undoubtedly made a great pitch to the E5 guys, there's no evidence that he knows what he's doing. But we have plenty of evidence that he will write a book about his experience, with a title such as, "Lost in the Dinosaur Graveyard: My Experience with the Suits, Salesmen, and Fire-Salers of the MSM."
