What does CNN anchor Kyra Phillips have in common with Lt. Frank Drebin of "The Naked Gun" movies, you might well ask? More than you might think!
As Newsbusters reports, Phillips spent that boring anchor downtime during CNN's live coverage of President Bush's New Orleans speech today saying one very bad word, forcing us to think of her husband's "passionate" nature, dissing her sister-in-law, and being completely unaware that her mic was on, until an astonishingly slow-on-the-uptake control room told her to zip it. Now, I'm not against candid banter by any stretch of the imagination. I am against candid banter when it becomes hurtful, icky, obscenity-laced candid banter when mixed with the catalyst of a live national audience. In part:
...During CNN's live coverage of President Bush's remarks from New Orleans, Phillips was unaware that her microphone was on and picked up portions of a conversation she was having with another woman. At 12:49pm EDT, those listening carefully could hear Phillips praise her husband:
Phillips: "Yeah, I'm very lucky in that regard with my husband. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving, you know, no ego.you know what I'm saying. Just a really passionate, compassionate great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there."
Phillips also inadvertently revealed how she feels about her sister-in-law:
Phillips: "..Brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him...Yeah. He.s married, three kids, but his wife is just a control freak...."
[unidentified woman #2]: "Kyra."
Phillips: "Yeah, baby?"
[unidentified woman #2]: "Your mic is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air..."
I don't know...sounds like she was just getting warmed up to me. President Bush who? Lord, it went on freaking forever, too. And woo-hoo: Wonkette's got the video, not to mention some gut-busting comments comparing Kyra to, yep, Leslie Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin in one of the Naked Gun movies. Don't pretend you don't know the scene we're talking about.
Didn't something similar happen to Frank Drebin at an LA City Council meeting once? Right before the Queen was going to visit?

All I can say is, Thanksgiving dinner '06 is shaping up to be a fun one in the Phillips household.
