The New York Daily News' Frank DiGiacomo labels CNN "The Castellanos News Network," because CNN is allowing paid contributor Alex Castellanos, a Republican media consultant, to come on its air and talk about the political issues of the day--while at the same time, Castellanos is doing advertising for BP. And those ads, of course, play on CNN, as well as everywhere else.
In fairness to CNN and Castellanos, he is not coming on to talk about the oil spill, but as DiGiacomo points out, CNN is not disclosing Castellanos' role in helping BP, even as BP helps CNN.
No doubt Castellanos is not the only one helping run media campaigns that play on cable newsers, but BP is not just any company. It's probably the most hated company in the country. No wonder CNN doesn't want to mention that Castellanos is working for BP. But viewers should know. And now, thanks to the Daily News, they do.
